James JinYao (進堯), teacher and practitioner of Qi Gong, Nei Gong, Internal Alchemy, and Classical Chinese Medicine.

When I first started my cultivation journey, I had no idea how important the basics were.

I spent thousands of dollars and travelled across Asia — not to learn advanced techniques — but simply to learn how to sit, stand, and breathe the right way.

In the mountains of Dharamsala, India, I remember thinking, “Why am I paying this much just to learn how to stand?”. It felt strange at the time… but something in me trusted the process.

Years later, I realized that this was the foundation that changed everything for me. The right posture — whether sitting or standing — is what actually allows energy to circulate. It’s what helped me stay grounded, feel my body clearly, and train with 10 times more effectiveness. It’s the reason I progressed so quickly in my practice.

The same thing happened with breathing.

I went to live at an organic farm outside Chiang Mai, Thailand to learn a simple Tibetan breathing sequence. At first, I was skeptical. “There are so many breathing methods… why this one?”

But afterwards, when I finally understood how energy really flows, it clicked. There is a very specific reason why the breath has to move in those exact steps — and once I felt it, everything opened.
